Cavalier FC took another step closer to the Digicel Premier League even after a tough 1-1 draw with Meadows in the JFF Confederation play-offs yesterday at Ferdie Neita Park.
Cavalier, who started the day in second spot on seven points, now lead the standing with eight -- one ahead of both Reno and Benfica, with Meadows bringing up the rear with five points with a round remaining.
The diminutive Locksley Thompson gave Cavalier a 49th-minute lead against the run of play before Sicaun Scott earned a share of the points for Meadows in the 65th.
With the two top teams qualifying for the Digicel Premier League for next season, only three points separate first-placed Cavalier, on eight, from bottom-placed Meadows, on five.
Benfica stun Reno, continue surge
Meanwhile, Benfica FC of St Ann did the unthinkable when they avenged their 1-0 first-round Premier League play-off defeat against Reno FC of Westmoreland by a similar margin in the return leg at Frome yesterday.
Playing in a stiff southerly wind and brilliant sunshine that was dimmed in the second half by dark clouds, the visitors took a step closer to a spot in next year's elite contest following a persistent solo effort from Damion James in the 58th minute.
James collected a long pass on the left, midway Reno's half, survived a strong challenge from Omar Johnson, then another from goalkeeper Dennis Taylor, before regaining control just outside the goal area that was left abandoned. James rolled the ball into the empty goal, sending the small number of Benfica supporters into wild celebration.
Benfica will host Cavalier FC in the final round of games on Sunday while Reno will travel to Ferdie Neota Park to face Meadows. |
